ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Working closely with Daptone Records since 2009, Jacob Blickenstaff has created many of the most powerful images of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings that exist. He’s had intimate access to Sharon’s life as an artist, covering key performances, recording sessions, back stage action, and life on the road. He's shot work for 7 album covers on the Daptone label, including SJDK's Soul of a Woman, I Learned the Hard Way, It's a Holiday Soul Party, and the Miss Sharon Jones! soundtrack, as well as albums from Antibalas, Naomi Shelton, and The Como Mamas.

This image, made at the Beacon Theater in 2014, has become one of the most powerful and widely seen performance images of Sharon. It was taken at the time of her major comeback concert following a year of cancer treatment, as chronicled in Barbara Kopple's acclaimed documentary Miss Sharon Jones!  Sharon leaves the stage before returning for the encore, elated and relieved after proving to herself and the audience that the deep power of her music was intact.

This photograph was initially published in Rolling Stone, was published in The New York Times twice, and also served as the basis for the initial version of the poster for Miss Sharon Jones!

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings played the legendary Apollo Theater for the first time with a two-night run in May 2010. This image, affectionately called 'The Whip' by folks at Daptone, was shot on the second night and has been used many times by Daptone as an image that distills Sharon’s energy on-stage down to a simple and powerful gesture.  This photograph was used in the deluxe packaging for I Learned the Hard Way and also served as the basis for the cover of Soul Time!
