Americana

Twelve (Out)Takes on Americana

I was very excited to have a lengthy review and photo essay published in Mother Jones covering the Americana Festival in Nashville (The Romney Tapes went live the day after I confirmed the assignment!) This is the first time I've written a long-form (ish) piece about music, and it's probably harder than making the pictures, certainly more nerve-wracking to see it published. Anyway, I'm proud of it and pleased to see it given a great editorial home, and also expose new people to the amazing music that I experienced at the Americana Music Festival.

There was so much to see that many of my favorite images didn't make it to publication, so here's a more personal look at what I heard and saw.

Eilen Jewell - Photos, CD Release at Joe's Pub

Singer-songwriter Eilen Jewell returned to NYC after her recent supporting gig with Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite boys at the Bell House. She was at Joe's Pub on Wednesday, June 16th in support of her upcoming album 'Queen of the Minor Key', released June 28 by Signature Sounds. Jewell performed with a trio of backing musicians, Jason Beck (drums) and Johnny Sciascia (bass) who provided simple and supportive background leaving lots of room for guitarist Jerry Miller's versatile and ornate twang.  Eilen's cool, economically focused voice came though most strongly on the beautiful ballad 'Over Again' and country boogie shuffle 'Bang Bang Bang', a song about a deranged 2-year old cupid firing recklessly at a gun show.

Jewell is on tour through July on the East Coast
